The records are arranged in four sub-series: Athletic Council records, Clemson College Athletic Association records, Walter M. Riggs Athletic papers, and originals. Subjects represented in the records include Clemson College Athletic Association, news releases, and promotional material. Prominent correspondents include past chairs of the Athletic Council: Cecil O. Huey, Stephen Wainscott and David Senn. Correspondence of early coaches, John W. Heisman and Walter M. Riggs is included.

The Athletic Council began in 1903, although its powers were not defined by the Board of Trustees until 1927. Over the years the size of the council increased from five to twenty-one members, some appointed by the President of the University and others elected from the nine Colleges.
